Chikungunya fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by the chikungunya virus. It causes fever, debilitating joint pain, muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash. Incubation period ranges from 2 – 12 days, commonly 3 – 8 days. Most patients recover on their own within 7-10 days, but joint pain may persist for weeks, months, or even years.
There is currently no specific medication, so supportive care is the main approach. These include: getting plenty of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, taking painkillers and fever reducers (only under a doctor’s supervision). Severe joint pain may require physical therapy.
The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) urges property management companies to strengthen mosquito prevention and control efforts. Key measures include keeping drains clear and filling sunken areas to prevent water accumulation. Drains and surface drains should be scrubbed with an alkaline detergent at least once a week to remove any potential mosquito eggs.
